Mungo Experience

Harry Nanya tours is owned and operated by Graham Clarke, a traditional Paakantyi Aborigine. Graham has been showing people around his backyard for 16 years .

Explanations are based on stories handed down from generations of his Elders and time he has spent with World Heritage, National parks, archaeologist, geologists, zoologists and scientologists, all curious to know the ancient secrets of the past hidden in this unique land.

Our journey begins with us picking you up at your accommodation anywhere from Wentworth, NSW to Mildura, Victoria.

As we travel the 110km road out to the national park along the way you will be entertained with history local people that have a station out this way.

The vegetation in the region, sparse though it is, is typical of the semi-arid zone we are in your guide will point out the native plants that have survived the trying time of the climate.

As we arrive at Mungo the spectacular lunar landscape is characterised by the dramatic Great Walls of China running along what was the eastern shoreline of the lake. It is almost 35 kilometres long and reaches 30 metres high in parts. The walls were formed over thousands of years by sediments deposited by winds as the lake dried.

On your easy 2km walk along the walls of china your guide will interpret all the significant sites. The mungo layer which was deposited before the last ice age is the most archeologically rich. During the ice age the lakes water level dropped and it became a salt lake. This turned the soil alkaline, which has helped preserve the remains left buried in the Walls of China.

There is evidence that Lake Mungo was an abundant source of fresh water and food and there is great archaeological evidence from people camping on the shore of the lake.

Stone tools grinders for making flour a stone axe head, middens with shells and bones, fish bones and evidence of hearths have been exciting discoveries some going back 50,000 years.

Pictures in the sand are used for easy interpretation of how over thousands of years climate change, natural erosion, wind and rain have all had a role in forming Mungo into its spectacular beauty as what it is today.

We will visit Mungo’s information centre with plenty of history and artefacts on display

Your guide will share with you the sounds of the didgeridoo and some dreamtime stories.

Close by take a short stroll through Mungo’s old Woolshed built by Chinese labourers back in 1869.

Enjoy our home cooked outback buffet style picnic meal served to you with surrounding views of the lake.
